Fencing on Zeetius

Fencing competition management software

Zeetius gives fencing federations, clubs and organisers one place to run their competitions, members and coaching. Fencers enter online by weapon and category, pools and direct elimination tableaux are configured for each event, pistes and referees are scheduled, and results become rankings and certificates, while Zeetius Academy and Zeetius Federation look after clubs, coaches and members across the season.

Foil, épée and sabre events

Individual and team events for each weapon, divided by age category and gender, each with its own entries and results.

Pools, then the tableau

Pool rounds followed by a direct elimination tableau, with pool sizes, promotion and seeding configured per competition.

Rankings from real results

National and age-group rank lists prepared from the competitions fencers actually entered, with certificates for every participant.

Weapons and events

Foil, épée and sabre competitions

Fencing is three sports in one. Foil is a thrusting weapon whose valid target is the torso, and it uses right of way, so the fencer who establishes the attack has priority. Épée is also a thrusting weapon, but the whole body is target, there is no right of way and both fencers can score at once. Sabre allows cuts as well as thrusts to the target above the waist, again with right of way.

Because the weapons are so different, competitions treat each one as a separate event. A national championship may run men's and women's foil, épée and sabre across several age categories, which can mean a large number of events over a few days. Each event on Zeetius has its own entry list, format, schedule and results, and fencers enter the weapons and categories they are eligible for.

Age categories in fencing typically run from youth groups through cadet and junior to senior and veterans, but the age limits and the categories offered are set by the federation or the organiser. On Zeetius, categories, eligibility and event formats are configured for each competition rather than fixed by the software.

  • Foil. Thrusts to the torso, decided by right of way when both fencers hit.
  • Épée. Thrusts anywhere on the body, with no right of way and double touches allowed.
  • Sabre. Cuts and thrusts above the waist, decided by right of way.

Pools and tableau

Fencing pools and direct elimination tableaux

Most individual fencing competitions follow the same shape. Fencers are first placed in pools, usually of six or seven, and fence every other member of the pool in bouts to five touches. After the pools, fencers are ranked on their results, commonly by the proportion of bouts won, then the difference between touches scored and received, then touches scored.

The pool ranking seeds the direct elimination tableau. Bouts in the tableau are usually fenced to fifteen touches, the strongest pool performers meet the weakest in the first round, and byes are given where the number of fencers does not fill the tableau. Many competitions eliminate a share of fencers after the pools, and some run a second pool round before the tableau.

On Zeetius, the pool size, the number of pool rounds, the share of fencers promoted, the seeding and whether third place is fenced off are configured for each event. Zet AI can suggest balanced seeds from rankings and recent form, and keep fencers from the same club or region apart in the early rounds.

  • Pools. Round-robin groups in which every fencer meets every other, in bouts to five touches.
  • Promotion. The share of fencers who progress from the pools to the tableau, set per competition.
  • Direct elimination. A seeded tableau fenced to fifteen touches, with byes where the entry does not fill it.

Team events

Fencing team events and relays

Team fencing uses a relay. In the widely used format, teams of three fence a match of nine bouts, each fencer meeting each opponent once, and the score carries over from bout to bout in steps of five touches until one team reaches forty-five or time runs out. Teams often include a reserve who can be substituted during the match under the rules of the competition.

Team events are usually fenced as a direct elimination tableau seeded from rankings, with placing matches where the organiser wants a full classification. On Zeetius, team entries are built from fencers registered with their club or region, the team tableau and placings are configured for each event, and the results are recorded against the team and each of its fencers.

Scheduling and officials

Piste scheduling and referee appointments

A fencing competition is run piste by piste. Pools are allocated to pistes, tableau bouts are called as pistes become free, and a fencer entered in two weapons or two categories must not be called to two pistes at once. Zeetius Tournaments manages many fields of play at once, and Zet AI can build a schedule that respects rest between bouts and avoids clashes for fencers in more than one event.

Referees are central to fencing, particularly in foil and sabre, where they decide right of way. Zeetius Federation accredits referees, records their qualifications and allocates them to pools and bouts, and Zet AI can suggest appointments by grade, availability and conflicts of interest, so a referee is not given a pool containing fencers from their own club.

Results are published as soon as the referees and the competition officials confirm them, so fencers, coaches and parents can see pool results and the tableau without waiting for a printed sheet on the wall. Live scoring for your fencing format can be discussed with our team, including how your pools and bouts are recorded on the day.

Clubs and coaching

Fencing club and academy management

Fencing clubs teach a technical sport over many years, often across all three weapons and from beginners' courses to international squads. Zeetius Academy manages athletes, batches, training plans, attendance and assessments, so a head coach can see each fencer's progress and plan individual lessons and group sessions from real records.

Fees, coach payroll and expense claims sit in the same system as the coaching. Parents of young fencers see their own child's attendance, assessments and fees, and nothing else, while coaches record sessions from the mobile app in the salle instead of copying notes into a spreadsheet afterwards.

Zet AI answers questions about a club's own data, such as which fencers have attended most consistently or which group is due its next assessment. Clubs and coaches can list in the Zeetius Sports Directory, where players and parents looking for fencing nearby can find them.

Federations and rankings

Fencing federation and ranking software

Fencing federations register fencers, clubs and referees and run a ranked competition calendar. Zeetius Federation registers each of them once and keeps them current through renewals, transfers and seasons, with membership cards and a complete history for every fencer. Membership fees and entries are paid online and recorded against the member, with reminders by email and SMS.

National rankings in fencing are usually built from points earned at designated competitions, weighted by the level of the event and the place achieved, with rules that vary between federations. Zeetius Federation prepares rank lists from real results by weapon, gender and age category, and every position can be traced back to the competitions that produced it.

Championships bring fencers, coaches, referees and guests to one venue for several days. Zeetius Connect accredits them online before they arrive, manages accommodation, meals and transport, and validates entry and coupons with QR codes, so the people side of the championship runs alongside the competition itself.
